Physical Education

Welcome to the Faculty of Physical Education.

We create an ethos of participation, inclusion and encouragement and are passionate about providing opportunities for all young people to be involved in sport and physical activity. At Williamwood we offer a range of extra-curricular clubs to both our pupils and cluster primaries and love to see our facilities filled with faces of excitement and enjoyment. Senior pupils continue to be role models for younger year groups. Our Pupil of the Block, Colours and House system provides us with opportunities to recognise the achievement of our pupils performing at all levels, which we make sure we celebrate loudly and proudly! Within the senior phase we offer varying pathways from Higher and Advanced Higher PE, Sports Development and SFA Refereeing with our uptake and attainment being amongst the strongest in the authority.

“I love PE, we have so many opportunities to play all of the sports that I love.”

“I have learned so many skills in PE that will help me to succeed after I leave high school.”

Sports Development

Sports Development

The National Progression Award (NPA) in Sports Development will develop your knowledge and skills required for coaching young people – Planning, Implementing and Evaluating.

The course takes a practical approach and you will have the opportunity to take part in all aspects of coaching and playing various sports both indoor and outdoor. This will also include a 6 week placement in one our local primary schools (during your Sports Development periods) that will involve the planning and delivering of Physical Education to a Primary 7 or S1 class.

Refereeing Course

Refereeing Course

The SQA Referee Development Award, SCQF Level 7 Advanced Higher Qualification, provides an opportunity for secondary school pupils to become involved in refereeing and broaden their football knowledge.

The award, run in partnership with the Scottish Qualifications Authority and Specsavers, is a core part of the Scottish FA Referee Operations department’s strategy to encourage and increase participation in refereeing.

There are two units:

Level 1: Laws of the Game – This is mainly theoretical, and focuses on identifying and interpreting the laws.

Level 2: Practical Refereeing – This requires pupils to apply theoretical knowledge to interpret situations, and includes a fitness component, report writing, and the opportunity to referee a match.

Upon successful completion of the course, candidates will be able to join their local Referees’ Association and start a career in refereeing.  This is a great opportunity for candidates to keep physically active, be involved in football and generate additional income.

‘Over a period of twenty five years, 1500 students from Williamwood High School are now successfully working in the creative arts and design industries’   Mabel Halliday

There is an ever-widening opportunity for your child to pursue a rewarding career in the creative arts and design industries. The department has forged important links with Art and Design Schools, Universities and Colleges across Scotland as well as creative industry courses, which are offered across the UK. We have been hugely successful in finding positive career pathways for our learners in Scotland and further afield. We have strong professional relationships with our alumni, who work closely with us to develop the ethos of the department. We are committed to examining the means by which art and design work is made – the rich array of styles, methods and materials that artists and designers have used as well as the subjects, ideas and issues that are successfully articulated by art and design. We provide a dynamic and vibrant environment to allow for diversity in thinking, opinion and ideas and are placing creativity at the centre of our departmental policy. No matter what career you choose, those who can research, create, present and communicate in a way that is intellectually innovative will excel. Art and Design enhances fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, problem solving skills and develops lateral thinking, skills that are highly desirable in all careers.
